BELMONT METHODIST CHURCH CEMETERY

Compiled by Dr. Stuart W. Harris in the late 1960s, Transcribed by Joan Hallford Hidle, SEP 2004, from his volume 12 of Southern Historical Records.

(I have visited this ancient church and cemetery several times. The church is the usual white, frame type generally found in the Black Belt. It is still in use, but no doubt on a limited basis, for the interior is covered with dust and the building is in need of paint. In a large fenced-in area to the rear of the building is found the old burial ground. The area is covered with high weeds and there are signs indicating that deer sleep and graze there. The tomb-stones are impressive and large, but covered with grime of ages. Several family plots are surrounded by iron-lace fences. I made a copy of the grave-stones on October 17, 1964, with the help of a former student, George Seier.)

BETHEL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH CEMETERY

Compiled by Dr. Stuart W. Harris in the late 1960s, Transcribed by Joan Hallford Hidle, SEP 2004, from his volume 12 of Southern Historical Records.

(notes from Pioneer Families of Sumter County, Alabama, by Nellie Jenkins, Vol. 1, Willo Publishing Company, 1961.)

On September 17, 1966, I paid a visit to Emelle, where I had the pleasure of talking to Mrs. Frank Stegall, who directed me to this old cemetery.

The church was located in the north central part of Township 20, Range 3 West. It was organized on September 22, 1835, but preaching had been going on there for a year previously. A hundred yards to the north of the church stood the Mathematical and Classical Academy, under the supervision of Benjamin P. Burwell.

After the Civil War, many of the settlers moved away and the church almost died. Finally it was torn down and rebuilt in Sumterville, three miles to the east of the original site.

DILLARD FAMILY CEMETERY

Compiled by Dr. Stuart W. Harris in the late 1960s, Transcribed by Joan Hallford Hidle, SEP 2004, from his volume 12 of Southern Historical Records.

This cemetery is located north of old Ramsey Station, about a couple of miles, and near the banks of Bodka Creek. It is very hard to reach, and to do so one has to go through pastures. The roads are rough in dry weather and like goo in wet weather. It is hard to locate even if one knows about where it is.

Dr. Dillard was one of the first doctors of his section, along with Dr. B. A. Jones. He married a sister of W. O. and J. M. Winston.

Only three stones were found, and their inscriptions are as follows:

John J. Dillard / born in Amherst County, Va. / March 7, 1797 / died Oct. 10, 1850.

Eliza / daughter of Dr. J. J. Dillard and N. C. Dillard / born Oct. 31, 1829 / died Oct. 17, 1851 / aged 21 years. / Erected by her husband.

Watson W. Dillard / born June 22, 1843 / died Aug. 14, 1856.

JOHN EVANDER BROWN CEMETERY, “THE CEDARS”, SUMTERVILLE

Compiled by Dr. Stuart W. Harris in the late 1960s, Transcribed by Joan Hallford Hidle, SEP 2004, from his volume 12 of Southern Historical Records.

This cemetery is located on the right side of the drive, leading from the old Sumterville-McCainville road, to the John E. Brown home, now occupied by his great granddaughter, Mrs. Burton G. (Julia Praytor) Killingsworth. This lovely old home, built in 1848, is known as “The Cedars”, as the drive was lined on either side by stately old cedars imported into the community from of Jones Bluff. A cyclone in the 1950’s uprooted all these trees and took the roof off the house, but did not destroy the lovely heirlooms which have been handed down in the family for generations.

John Evander Brown was the grandson of Rev. John Brown, a Revolutionary patriot, of Burlington, N.J. Rev. Brown was born Aug. 20, 1714, and died in South Carolina in 1801/02/ He had five daughters and two sons, Sam and Jesse. Sam Brown married (1st) Miss Newberry and they had 2 sons, John and William; he married (2nd) Miss Murphy and had a son, Jeremiah.

John Evander Brown’s father was John Brown, son of Rev. John Brown and his first wife. On Sept. 1, 1808, John Brown married Julia Ann Windham, and they became the parents of ten children (7 boys, 3 girls), of whom John Evander Brown was one.

The father of these ten children was drowned in Pike Co. Ala., after which John Evander Brown, along with his “kith and kin” came to Sumter Co. Some of his brothers settled near him, and his half-uncle, Jeremiah or Jere Brown, settled a couple of miles east of him.

John Evander and George Brown, brothers, married Mary Jane and Sara Godfrey, daughters of William Godfrey. John E. served his country in the State Legislature, and is said to have been instrumental in getting the name of his town changed from “Patton Hill” to “Sumterville”. He and Mary Jane had the following issue: Mrs. Julia Stewart, Mrs. (Dr.) R. M. Harris, Mrs. (Major) J. G. Harris, Mrs. Nettles, Mrs. Lurton (who married 2nd to Dr. Randall), and Mrs. Reynolds. Inscriptions in the cemetery are:

John Evander Brown / born Sept. 5, 1809 / died Mar. 17, 1868.

Mary Jane / wife of “ / born Jan. 12, 1816 / died Mar. 6, 1883.

(She was the daughter of Wm. Godfrey and Harriett Pegues (Powe) Godfrey. Before being married to Wm. Godfrey, Harriett had been married to a Mr. McRae.)

John E. Brown, Jr. / died Mar. 3, 1866 / aged 22 years, 8 mos.

Arthur Godfrey Brown / died Oct. 9, 1866 / aged 12 years, 10 months, 6 days.

Julia Brown / wife of Lt. Col. Stewart, C.S.A. / born Dec. 11, 1836 / died Mar. 1, 1928.

(page 145)

(NOTE: She was the daughter of John E. Brown. Her husband, Col. Stewart, was killed accidentally by an explosion of shell from his own cannon during the Civil War. His brother Frederick Stewart had married Amelia Godfrey, sister of Mary Jane (Godfrey) Brown.)

Mary Jane Stewart / wife of Hugh Boyd Praytor / born Apr. 17, 1857 / died Mar. 17, 1929.
(NOTE: She was the daughter of Col. & Julia Stewart.)

Hugh Boyd Praytor / born Apr. 1. 1856 / died May 15, 1942.
(NOTE: He was the son of Middleton Praytor.)

Charles Stewart Praytor / born Nov. 5, 1883 / died Oct. 13, 1918.

Hugh E. / son of H. B. & M. S. Praytor / born July 25, 1899 / died July 16, 1890.
(NOTE: Here we have one of Mrs. Jenkins’ frequent mistakes.)

Two little graves marked “Infant” children of R. M. & E. D. Harris.

Ella F. / daughter of R. M. & E. D. Harris / died Feb. 19, 1864 / aged 2 years, 10 months.

(NOTE: The three above children were grand children of John E. & Mary Jane Brown/)

Charles Stewart Herring / born Mar. 18, 1887 / died Apr. 1, 1922.

Julia Ada Herring / born July 11, 1892 / died Oct. 16, 1918.

(NOTE: Above two were also grandchildren of John E. Browns.)

JONES FAMILY CEMETERY

Compiled by Dr. Stuart W. Harris in the late 1960s, Transcribed by Joan Hallford Hidle, SEP 2004, from his volume 12 of Southern Historical Records.

This cemetery is located about 2 miles north of Emelle and west of Highway #17 about a mile. It is on an impassable plantation road except in very dry weather. It is almost impossible to find except by a guide. There is a high brick wall around it, in perfect condition.

After the deaths of Dr. Jones and his wife, and two of his sons dead, Philip Willingham had charge of this plantation with its 106 slaves. At the present Mr. R. H. Darrar, a relative, has it in charge. Inscriptions are as follows:

Dr. Benjamin A. Jones / born June 10, 1791 / died June 29, 1859.

NICHOLAS LACY CEMETERY

Compiled by Dr. Stuart W. Harris in the late 1960s, Transcribed by Joan Hallford Hidle, SEP 2004, from his volume 12 of Southern Historical Records.

This cemetery is located about a mile in front of the A. G. Boyd place on the Emelle-Livingston Road. The Lacy place is now owned by Jake Dial. The old cemetery is in a pasture. We had to walk about to get to it and even then could only find pieces of two stones which were partially covered with sod. There were signs of perhaps a dozen graves.

Nicholas Lacy / born Oct. 4, 1790 / died July 20, 1858.

Mary Lacy / born 1793 / died June 26, 1843.

OLD GAINSVILLE CEMETERY

Compiled by Dr. Stuart W. Harris in the late 1960s, Transcribed by Joan Hallford Hidle, SEP 2004, from his volume 12 of Southern Historical Records.

(Copied November 14, 1964. When I first arrived at this ancient cemetery on the morning of the 14th, the area was covered in fog and looked very much like a movie set for a horror picture. Gray mist seemed to swim around the tall, silent stones and black iron-fences.
The condition of this burial ground is extremely good, there are only a few broken stones. Below is a complete list of those buried there according to their tombstones, 198 citizens of the town plus 220 unknown Confederate soldiers. Sixteen of those listed were born before 1800, the oldest being 1770. The earliest date was that of Colonel Moses Lewis in 1836.)
