Generation No. 1
1. BARTON S.1 RENEAU1,2,3 was born 28 Apr 1829 in Georgia, and died 21 Oct 1902 in Geneva County, Alabama. He married (1) MARY A.S. (NEE?) RENEAU Bef. 1855. She was born Abt. 1839 in Alabama, and died Bef. 1863. He married (2) MARGARET (NEE?) RENEAU3,4 Bef. 1863. She was born Abt. 1846 in North Carolina.
Notes for BARTON S. RENEAU:
There is a small cemetery containing seven graves enclosed by chain link fencing
adjacent to Alabama Highway 103 north of Slocomb, Alabama. The cemetery consists
of (left-to-right, as one stands at the foot of the graves) (1) Infant, (2)
Infant, (3) B.S. Reneau, born April 28, 1829 - died October 21, 1902, (4)
Margaret Reneau born 1834 - died March 7, 1896, (5) Adult Unmarked, (6) Infant,
(7) Infant.
A quick review of census reports revealed that Barton S. Reneau, age 29, a
mechanic, born in Georgia, wife Mary A.S. Reneau, age 21, born in Alabama,
and children; William H. 5, Allen M. 3, King D. 2, and Anderson S. ten months
old lived at a Newton Post Office address in Dale County, Alabama on August
15, 1860. Ten years later, B.S. Reneau, age 37, born in Georgia, wife Margaret,
24, born in North Carolina, and children; W.H. 14, King 8 (sic), Jack 7, and
E.T.C. (female) nine months of age (born October 1869) and John and Amanda
Morgan (relationship not given), ages 9 and 7, lived on a Newton Post Office
Route, Dale County, Alabama on August 4, 1870. The next reference to this family
was on June 28, 1900 when William H. Reneau age 45, born in Alabama, his father
in Georgia and his mother in Alabama, his wife Josephine 47, born in Alabama,
and children; Effie J. 19 born in Texas, Samantha A. 15, born in Texas, and
Barton S. age 10 born in Alabama were living at Wright's Creek Precinct, Geneva
County, Alabama. The 1900 census indicated that William and Josephine had been
married ten years (married about 1890) and that Josephine had given birth to
two children - none living.
Obvious differences in ages and dates notwithstanding, it appears that the
couple buried in the small cemetery is Barton S. and his second wife Margaret
(nee?) Reneau. Two children on the 1860 census who did not appear on the 1870
census were Allen M. and Anderson S. Reneau. Perhaps two of the infant graves
are theirs? The William H. Reneau on the 1860, 1870, and 1900 censuses appears
to be the same person, the son of Barton S. Reneau. If so, details in the census
indicate that he was first married to unknown, later moved to Texas, had at
least two children, moved back to Alabama by 1900, had Barton S. (II), by his
first wife, first wife died, he then married Josephine and had two children
by her, both died. William's deceased infants, by Josephine, could be buried
in two of the unmarked infant graves.
Barton S. Reneau purchased 120 acres of land from the Land Office in Montgomery, Alabama on May 25, 1885. The description of the land in Township 4N, Range 25 East places the land in Dale County, Alabama where he lived in 1860 and 1870 when the censuses were taken, well north of the burial site in Geneva County, Alabama.
