I am looking for details of this murder case. All the time I was growing up, I was told Fred Ashford was killed in a duel or that his horse just came walking home with him on it, dead. I'd like to know what happened. Does anybody have an account of this? or letters? anything...

Dec. 30- Fred Ashford killed by Felix Brown at Courtland. (Leighton News 8
Jan 1897)
F. T. BROWN, who shot and killed Fred ASHFORD in Courtland a few days ago,
has had his preliminary trial and was bound over in a bond of $2,000 to await
the action of the next grand jury. (Leighton News 8 Jan 1897)

MICHAEL1) was born June 21, 1863 in Limestone Co, AL, and died December 30,
1896 in Courtland, Lawrence, AL. He married LUCIE LEE BYRD September 27, 1882
in Columbia, TN, daughter of BOLLING BYRD and GRIZELLE TORIAN. She was born
December 08, 1862 in Courtland, Lawrence, Al, and died December 30, 1937 in
Courtland, Lawrence, Al.
