Mrs. Brown, wife of Calvin Brown, formerly of this place.


Feb. 6, 1873
Died in Gadsden on the 30th ult., Charlie Brown, son of Calvin Brown, aged about 14 years. He was carried to Birmingham for interment.


Oct. 2, 1873
Died in Coryell Co., Tx. Mr. D. C. Gilliland son of W. B. Gilliland of this county.


Oct. 16, 1873
Died in Wills Valley on the 10th, of consumption, Mrs. Missouri Crump, wife of William Crump, and daughter of B. F. Roden, Sr.

On the 29th ult., Mrs. Gilliland wife of W. B. Gilliland died.

Wiley B. Gilliland aged 59 years, 7 months, and 26 days.

Eli Bynum, one of the first settlers of Calhoun County died at his residence on the 11th, aged about 74 years.

Died in this County, 5 miles East of Gadsden, on the 4th inst., Walter Brooks of Typhoid Fever age 9. Walter was the son of Dick Brooks, who was killed by the explosion at Wilson's Mill, in this city on the 25th ult.

Died in East Gadsden on the 29th Mrs. Sam Simpson. She leaves a baby 2 days old.


Dec. 24, 1895
Mrs. Elizabeth McCauley died at J. W. Gilliland's last Friday.


May 26, 1896
Pompie Lanier, nephew of Mrs. J. T. Brooks died last friday at his home in West Point Georgia. He was the brother of Mrs. Eugene Randall.


Aug. 17, 1897
Mr. Uriah W. Bynum died at his home, one and a half mile from Oneonta, on the 9th. From the effects of a kick by a horse. His sons, Walter and Oliver Bynum, pulled him up after the accident and carried him to his bed.


Mar. 15, 1898
Capt. James T. Brooks is back from Lafayette, Where his brother, W. J. Brooks, died on the 6th, aged 49 years.
While his body was lying in state his father-in-law, J. A. Grace, expired, he was 68 years old.


Aug. 12, 1898
Miss Maggie Weaver died at Choccolocco, in Calhoun County on the 8th. She taught public school in this city several years ago.


Feb. 21, 1899
Mrs. Salena Simpson, mother of Capt. W. P. Simpson, of Rome, and Mrs. W. W. Browning, died at the home of the latter in this city last Friday. Mrs. Simpson was 86 years old. Her remains were interred in Forrest Cemetery.


June 13, 1899
Mrs. Martha Simpson, died May 31st near Branchville, St. Clair County.


June 27, 1899
Mrs. Emily L. Weaver died on the 10th at her home on Sand Mountain. She was 71 years old.
Her granfather Washington Stevens was 1st cousin to George Washington, and fought in the Revolutionary War, under George Washington.
Her father David Andrews, fought through the Indian Wars.
Her oldest brother was killed in the Mexican War, and two brothers Joseph, and John Andrews were killed in the Confederate Army.
She has the candle stick that furnished the light for George Washington to eat supper before we gained independence.
She was the last of her father's family.

Earnest W. Moses, 91, Egypt community, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001.He is survived by his family.
Private memorial service will be held in Illinois at a later date. Village Chapel, Alabama City, is announcing.

Perry, Mary Cathren McGinnis
Mary Cathren McGinnis Perry, 74, Gaylesville, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001. She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by her family.
Funeral will be at 3 p.m. today at the Perry Funeral Home Chapel. Burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Bertha Reeves, 87, Piedmont, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001.
She is survived by her family.

Casper Ernest Veal, 78, Fort Payne, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001.

Whipkey, Robert 'Bob' Charles
Robert "Bob" Charles Whipkey, 49, Mentone, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001.
He is survived by his family.
Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Moonlake Baptist Church. Burt Funeral Home is in charge.

Brooks, Jeanette
Funeral service for Mrs. Jeanette Brooks, 75, Gadsden, will be Monday at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Collier-Butler Funeral Home with Harold Arthur Sims and Bill Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in Jones Chapel Cemetery at Hokes Bluff.
Mrs. Brooks was a native and lifelong resident of Gadsden area. She was of the Baptist faith and loved her arts and crafts. She was preceded in death by her husband, Felix M. Brooks.
She is survived by her daughters, Betty Russell, Frances Nix and Martha Eliott Waldrep, all of Gadsden; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Kathryn Robertson, Webster's Chapel, and Jackie Grigsby, Altoona; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and friends.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Collier-Butler Funeral Home.

Hicks, James Edward
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Anchor Baptist Church for Mr. James Edward Hicks, 75, Attalla, who died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001. The Rev. Ronnie Roberts will officiate. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Morgan Funeral Chapel is directing.
Mr. Hicks was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church, Attalla, and a veteran of World War II (Navy). He was retired from the City of Attalla. Mr. Hicks was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Hicks Smith; brothers, L.J., Billy, Clifford and Milburn Hicks; parents, Jim and Clyde Hicks.
He is survived by his son, Ricky (Vicky) Hicks, Albertville; daughter, Joyce Hicks (Glen) Richards, Attalla; grandchildren, Shonnie (Stanley) Hubbard, Gadsden, Robin (Phillip) Battles, Collinsville, Jason Hicks, Attalla; great grandchildren, Ryan and Rebecca Hubbard and Nathan Battles; brothers, Herbert Hicks and Jimmy (Glenda) Hicks, both of Gadsden; sisters, Loraine (Ben) Crowe, Attalla, and Irene Railey, Gadsden; several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Corky, Glen, Larry and Cecil Hicks, Ben Crowe, and Berley Wayne Hill.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. George P. Walker III, Dr. John Keithan II and Tom Johnson.
A very special thanks to all the love and support given to our dad by Ben Crowe.

Knighten, Alice Aretta 'Rita'
Mrs. Alice Aretta "Rita" Knighten, 60, 7385 County Road 48, Cedar Bluff, passed away Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, in a Birmingham hospital.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Perry Funeral Home Chapel with the revs. Charles Moses and Ray Haggard officiating. Burial will be in Crestwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Knighten was a native of Huntsville, member of Round Mountain Baptist Church, a member of The American Legion Auxiliary, a real estate broker, beautician and a homemaker. She was the daughter of the late Ross and Loma Grace Rice Bullock.
She is survived by her husband, John E. Knighten; son, Frank C. (Diana) Hayle, Griffith, Ind.; daughters, Linda (Paul) Brausch, Leesburg, and Rita Hayle, Highland, Ind.; sister, Virginia Raines, Huntsville; grandchildren, Matthew, Angela, Olivia and Jessica; great-grandchild, Clayton.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Campbell, Frank Hayle, Paul Brausch, Khristopher Roberts, Cletus Bach and Lloyd Roper.

Puckett, Charles F.
Charles F. Puckett, 95, Oneonta, passed away on Friday, Nov. 23, 2001. He was the oldest member of Taits Gap Baptist Church and was retired from Robbins Coal Company. He is preceded in death by his first wife Elsie (Robinson) Puckett.
Survivors are his wife, Vida Puckett; daughters, Lillian (Bill) Mitchell, Atlanta, Hazel (Russell) Boren; son, Charles Puckett (Barbara), Pinson; sisters, Effie Clements, California, Mandy McWaters, Bessemer, and Idella Atkinson, Blount County; one half-brother, Alfred Puckett, Dade City, Fla.; eight grandchildren and 11 great -grandchildren.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. from Lemley Funeral Chapel, Oneonta. Lemley Funeral Chapel is directing.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight and Monday from 8 a.m. until funeral time.

Perkins, Roy A.
Funeral service for Mr. Roy A. Perkins, 47, Rainbow City, who passed away Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, will be today at 3:30 p.m. in the chapel of Collier-Butler Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Bailey officiating. Interment will follow in Rainbow Memorial Park.
Mr. Perkins was a native and lifelong resident of Etowah County. He was a captain with the Rainbow City Police Department, where he served the past 20 years. His memberships include Reed Memorial Baptist Church, Alabama Peace Officers Association and The Fraternal Order of Police. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy F. and Ruby Perkins.
Mr. Perkins is survived by his wife, Deborah Whitehead Perkins, Rainbow City; sons, Marc Perkins, Birmingham and Jerry and Christine Perkins, Lawrenceville, Ga.
Pallbearers will be the members of the Rainbow City Police Department.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Rainbow City Fire Department - medics, dispatchers and all city employees. The parlor will be open today after 9 a.m.

Ray, Robert Wayne
Services for Robert Wayne Ray, 60, Piedmont, will be today at 2 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Buerhaus officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery.
Mr. Ray died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham.
Mr. Ray was a Cherokee County native and had been a Piedmont area resident most of his life. He was a member of the Piedmont Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was retired from Goodyear. He was preceded in death by his father, Savage W. Ray.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine Ray, Piedmont; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gina and Robin Roberts, Nances Creek, and Kerry and Rodney Lipscomb, Oxford; mother, Frances Ray, Piedmont; two brothers, Norris Ray, Piedmont, and Bruce Ray, Helena; four grandchildren, Casey Lipscomb, Kurt Lipscomb, Mallory Roberts and Torre Roberts.
Pallbearers will be Paul Ray, Earl Boles, Jimmie Ray, Bobby Reedy, Frank Stewart and Danny Westbrooks.

Services for Judy Reyes Adkins, 48, Cayce, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of West Columbia, S.C., conducted by Dr. Lonnie H. Shull Jr. and Dr. Thomas Cuttino, with burial in Celestial Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of West Columbia or the Epilepsy Foundation of the Midlands.
Active pallbearers will be Olin Hayden, Tres Reep, Bubba Inabinet, Trey Adkins, Jeff Adkins and Mick Cole. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia.
Judy Reyes Adkins died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001. Born in Killeen, Texas, she was the daughter of Viviano and Virginia Gladys Hatfield Reyes. She was a former employee of Busbee Middle School. She was a member of First Baptist Church of West Columbia, where she taught third- and fourth-grade children in Sunday School and was a member of the Rainbow Sunday School class.
Surviving are her husband, Harry Lee Adkins of Cayce; her parents, Viviano and Virginia Reyes of Columbia; sons and daughter-in-law, Richard Michael and Sharon Jur Adkins of Lexington and Brian Neal Adkins of Cayce; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jimmy and Linda Reyes Reep of Elgin and Bobby and Kathleen Reyes Stevens of Lexington; brothers and sister-in-law, Steve Anthony and Janice White Reyes of Springfield and David Andrew Reyes of Cayce; mother-in-law, Nellie Adkins; other in-laws, Margaret and "O.D." Fennelle, Mary Louise
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Forrest Cemetery for Mrs. Mary Louise Fennelle, Tuscaloosa, who died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001. The Rev. Elton Beasley will officiate. Collier-Butler Funeral Home is in charge.
Mrs. Fennelle was formerly of Gadsden and Birmingham and a member of First Methodist Church of Gadsden. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Hobbs Fennelle; her parents, Joseph H. and Imogene Sherman; brothers, Joe Sherman and Thurston Sherman.
Survivors include her daughter, Jean Dee Rosene, Tuscaloosa; son, Charles (Jan) Fennelle, Jacksonville, Fla.; granddaughters, Kim (Gary) Roy, Cartersville, Ga., and Charlene (James) Keough, Apex, N.C.; grandson, Chuck Fennelle, Fernandina Beach, Fla.; great-grandson, Nicholas Roy, Cartersville; great-granddaughter, Sydney Nicole Fennelle, Orlando, Fla.; sister, Imogene Land, Fernandina Beach.

Gillespie, Lowery Morgan
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Boaz Carr Chapel for Mr. Lowery Morgan Gillespie, 80, North Main Street, Boaz, who died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at Marshall Medical Center South. Bro. Steve Eubanks will officiate. Burial in Hillcrest Cemetery. Boaz Carr Funeral Home is in charge.
Mr. Gillespie was a member of First Baptist Church of Boaz and Gideon Sunday School Class. He was a U.S. Marine veteran having served during World War II in the Pacific. He worked as a pharmacist for the family owned pharmacy Gillespie's Drug Store. He was a volunteer driver for CASA. Mr. Gillespie enjoyed traveling, golf and sports. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lowery Pelham and Mona Morgan Gillespie.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen Gillespie, Boaz; son, Robert (Bob) Gillespie, Boaz; daughter, Jeannine Gillespie, Boaz; granddaughter, Katherine Helen Gillespie, Boaz; brothers, Gerald Pelham Gillespie, Snead, Thoams Joseph Gillespie, Cleveland; nieces, Lowerye Kaye, Mona Lee and Margo Kathleen; and nephew, Tim Gillespie.
The family will receive flowers or donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Boaz Building Fund.

Green, Vinnie Elizabeth Morris
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Smith's Chapel Baptist Church for Vinnie Elizabeth Morris Green, 83, who entered eternal life Monday, Nov. 26, 2001. The Revs. Walter Childers and Niles Swander will officiate. Burial in Shady Grove Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral Home is in charge.
Mrs. Green was a native and lifelong resident of Etowah County and member of Smith's Chapel Baptist Church. She was employed with Dwight Mills for a number of years and retired from H.D. Lee Co. in Boaz. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Robert Steven Morris, Emmett J. Green; daughter, Anna Jane Key; and great-grandson, Steven Lee Tolbert.
Mrs. Green is survived by three sons, Joe and wife Lucy Morris, Southside, Gary and wife Jeanne Morris, Gadsden, and Ralph Morris, Meridian, Miss.; six grandchildren, Greg Morris, Timmy Morris, Jimmy Morris, Candace Tolbert, Elizabeth Key, DaShell Brock; great-grandchildren, Brandi Tolbert, Will Brock, Cassie Brock, Jacquline Morris and Courtney Morris; and great-great-grandchild, Lee Anna Grace Tolbert.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to service.

Moon, Mary Frances
Funeral will be at 1 p.m Friday at Collier-Butler Chapel for Mrs. Mary Frances Moon, 84, who passed away Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001. The Rev. Phillip Ellen will officiate. Burial in Forrest Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral Home is in charge.
Ms. Moon was preceded in death by her husband, Fred L. Moon; parents, Annie Mae Fordor and Charles Raley; and brother, Charlie Raley. She was a member of Bellevue United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her son, Bill Moon; daughters, Sheila (Kenneth) Haynie and Carrol (George) Ellis; grandchildren, Heather and Spencer Moon, Bret and Bart Ellis and Kendra and Lance Haynie.
Pallbearers will be Frank Shelly, Mike Moon, Pat Moon, Tom Miller, Jeff Miller and Brandon Morgan.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Mazen Hakim and Dr. Kenny Smith. Special thanks to the eighth-floor CCU nurses and staff at Gadsden Regional Medical Center and McGuffey's Rehab nurses and staff.

Portwood, Brenda Jean
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Glencoe-Hokes Bluff Chapel for Brenda Jean Portwood, 44, Alabama City, who went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001. The Revs. Larry Perkins and Jayben Killingsworth will officiate. Burial in Clayton Cemetery. Glencoe-Hokes Bluff Funeral Home is in charge.
Mrs. Portwood was a native of Etowah County all of her life. She was a member of the Oasis Christian Center in Fyffe. She always welcomed all who were in need in her home.
She is preceded in death by her father, L.E. Johnson.
She is survived by her husband, Donald Portwood; daughters, Tammy Reeves, Vickie (Charles Huggins) Bartlett and Lisa Starr Miller; son, Shane A. Bartlett; daughter-in-law, Angela Rose Miller; mother, Ruby Keenum; brother, Bobby Coker, Texas; 10 grandchildren with two grandchildren on the way; special children, Nicole Green and Waylon Green; two special stepsons, Adam (Amanda) Portwood and Daniel (Casey) Portwood; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Ronald Portwood, Bobby Portwood, Jonathon Portwood, Stevie Johnson, Eric Johnson and Jacob Johnson.

Smith, Ida Mae
Mrs. Ida Mae Smith was called to sit by her Lord Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001. She was 88 years old. Born Feb. 17, 1913, in Hohenwald, Tenn., the daughter of sharecroppers, she married the late J.U. (Son) Smith and moved to Gadsden to raise a family. They had two children, James U. Smith Jr. (deceased) and Jane S. Bishop. Both of which settled in Etowah County and raised families. She was raised in cotton fields and worked in the Dwight cotton mill. She grew up with her country in its greatest century, witnessing both Wold Wars, Charles Lindberg, the Great Depression, the first man on the moon, and she saw her family grow and prosper. Her generation was the first to allow women the right to vote and recognize American Indians as citizens. She was a living history of the Twentieth Century. Her love and care for her children and grandchildren have caused them to succeed in life far beyond what her meager upbringing allowed for her. She will always be loved and dearly missed.
Ida was a member of Lookout Mountain Freewill Baptist Church where her husband was deacon until his death.
She is survived by her sister, Elva Devault (Johnny), Nashville, Tenn.; daughter, Jane Bishop (Calvin); daughter-in-law, Ann Smith; grandchildren, Dale Nash, Debbie Bearden (Keith), Bryan Bishop; and great-grandchildren, Adam Nash, Katie Nash and Dustin Bearden, all from Etowah County.
Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Village Chapel. Private graveside services will be Saturday. The Revs. Noland and Tim Holland will officiate. Village Chapel Funeral Home, Alabama City, is in charge.
The family would like to thank Maudie Templeton for being Ida's best and most cherished friend, Dr. Byron Nelson for his care and compassion, Lindy Blair for her love and care for Granny in her final year, BMC Cherokee and staff, Cherokee EMS, Cherokee County Nursing Home and station one staff.

Stewart, Kathryn Griffin
Kathryn Griffin Stewart, formerly of Montgomery, died peacefully Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, in Houston surrounded by her loving family. She was born Sept. 10, 1918, in Pennsylvania, and spent the majority of her youth in Alabama. Mrs. Stewart was preceded in death by her first husband, Albert M. Berry Jr.; second husband, Fred M. Stewart; and brother, John E. Griffin. She is survived by her daughter, Paula Bazan (Tom), Houston; stepson, Fred M. Stewart Jr. (Judy), Big Fork, Mont.; grandsons, Gene Harrison (Susan), Houston, and Richard Harrison (Jennifer), Austin, Texas; nephew, Michael G. Griffin (Colley), Montgomery; niece, Marilee Mallory (Jerry), Montgomery; and numerous loving friends and extended family.
Mrs. Stewart lived many years in Houston before returning to Montgomery, where she married Mr. Stewart and worked for Huntingdon College. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Montgomery and was an active member of the Tower Class, where she maintained many friendships until her death. Upon the death of Mr. Stewart, she returned to Houston to be closer to her daughter and grandsons. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Downtown Houston.
She will be remembered by her family and friends for her courage, generosity and unwavering faith.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice at the Texas Medical Center, 1905 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77030, or First United Methodist Church of Montgomery, 2416 W. Cloverdale Park, Montgomery, AL 36106. Santana Funeral Home, Houston, is in charge.
