In Hallowed Memory To Honor Corporal David Alexander Wood, CSA
1824-1864. Sarah Ann Wilkerson Wood 1824-1907. David was born in
North Carolina and moved to Jackson County, FL. around 1838. He
married Sarah Ann in 1843. They moved to Butler County, AL. after
1850. Their children were Richard Leander, David Alexander II, Sarah Pleacedie and Beulah Ann. In 1856 David and Sarah became charter members of Sardis Baptist Church in Pidgeon Creek, AL. David was killed in the War Between The States in 1864. Sarah joined Pleasant Home Baptist Church in 1884. She is buried here. David's Military Service:
August 1, 1863: Joined Company D. 61st. Regt. Alabama Volunteers, Confederate States Army. Assigned to Dept. of Gulf, Pollard, AL. Feb. 1864: Assigned to Army of Northern Virginia under Lt. Gen. Jubal A. Early of Confederate States Army.
Sept. 19, 1864:Killed in mortal combat at 3rd Battle of Winchester. Buried at Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Stonewall Cemetery Complex, Winchester, VA.

TOWNSHIP 7N-RANGE 17E-SECTION 25, CRENSHAW COUNTY, ALABAMA. 4.3 MILES WEST ON HWY 29 FROM BRANTLEY, ALABAMA.

Shreves Cemetery

Location: Abondoned cemetery found on Happy Hollow Hunting Club grounds, Crenshaw County, Alabama. From Georgianna Hwy turn west onto Mulberry Road (dirt road). Go 0.8 miles and cross double bridges. Continue on 1.8 miles and keep left. Go another 0.6 miles and cross bridge. Continue another 0.6 miles and you will see a church on your right, continue on and veer left then continue straight until you come to a crossroads (1-2 miles), go straight through the crossroads and continue another 1.3 miles and veer right. Go 1.1 miles (crossing a beaver pond) and veer left. Go 0.4 miles and veer left again. Road is rough, but continue 0.4 miles and you will see the cemetery in the woods on your left (you will have to look carefully as it is very overgrown, but you will see the cemetery is surrounded by a cinder block wall about 2 feet high.

Hamilton Cemetery

Location: Location: Abondoned cemetery found on Happy Hollow Hunting Club grounds, Crenshaw County, Alabama. From Georgianna Hwy turn west onto Mulberry Road (dirt road). Go 0.6 miles to gated road on right. Go down gated road about 1/2 mile and the cemetery is located off the road a good ways into the woods. The cemetery appears to have been rather large and there are numerous apparent gravesites with no headstones, or simply a rock or old broken vase marking the site.There were only two markers found. Thanks to Lomax Raley, hunt club member, for escorting us to the cemetery location! . I do not recommend attempting to locate this cemetery on your own as you will likely be unable to find it. --Lisa--

Lisa's Notes :
Upon checking the Alabama Federal Census records I was able to locate the following on the 1870 Crenshaw County, Alabama census: Household #174, Kit Hamilton an 84 year old, black, male born in Georgia and wife Sarah age 65 also born in Georgia. Residing with them are: Lydia age 12, Charles age 15 and John age 10, all born in Alabama. Neighboring them in household #173 is Mose Hamilton age 25, a black male born in Alabama, his wife Amy age 21 also born in Alabama, their two sons Lewis (age 4) and Thomas (age 3), and infant daughter Mittie (born in December of 1869). The children of Mose & Amy all being born in Alabama. Also neighboring Kit and Sarah "Sallie" Hamilton, in household #175, is Henry Hamilton a 40 year old, black male born in Alabama and his wife Henrietta age 30, also born in Alabama. It is difficult to determine the relationship, if any, of Mose and Henry to Kit Hamilton, however, it is likely that Mose and Henry may be sons of Kit and Sarah (Sallie) Hamilton, a supposition which should be further investigated by persons interested in this family. Also nearby, in the same township in 1870 are Ellis Hamilton of household #166, a 36 year old black male, and his family and in household #171 there are found residing together three black women namely Morgan Hamilton age 23, Caroline Hamilton age 21 and Eliza, also aged 21 years. Were these women siblings to one another and were they siblings to possibly Ellis, Henry and Mose? A search of Crenshaw County probate records might resolve some of these questions.

A quick perusal of the 1880 Crenshaw County, Alabama Federal census turns up the following additional Hamiltons:
household #59: Moses Hamilton, black male age 34?, wife Emma age 33, son Lewis age 14, son Thomas age 12, daughter Mittie age 10, daughter Mollie age 8, daughter Janey age 6, and son Bob age 4. This is the same Mose Hamilton appearing on the 1870 census as noted above. Also residing with Moses are Hiram Hamilton age 25 and wife Minda age 21 with their daughter Lizzie age 2. Sallie Hamilton, whose grave was located in the Hamilton cemetery, appears on the same census page with Moses as household #63: Sallie Hamilton, black, female age 65, daughter Caroline Hamilton age 37 and grandchildren James (age 9), Ned (age 6) and Caroline (age 2). Next door in houshold #64 is Emmanual Hamilton age 44 and wife Amanda age 3?. This family is the Ellis Hamilton family of the 1870 census, therefore, one can then calculate his full name to be Emmanual Ellis Hamilton.
