Coffee County, Alabama Cemeteries

Holland - Grimes Cemetery

Located 2.7 miles down Coffee County Road 401

from County Road 141, in the Curtis Community of Coffee County Alabama,

Surveyed by Patricia Foley Gibson on October 18, 1999.

All inscriptions are noted as they were found with the exceptions of using the words, Birth & Died, in place of B & D. My personal notes and notes as to how they relate with others in this cemetery are in Italic.

Row 1

Elizabeth Jordan - In memory of Elizabeth, wife of William Jordan. Died Aug. 14, 1894. Age 75 years.

Albert Lester - son of G.R. & L. B. Rhodes. Born 3-15-1904 Died 5-1-1904

John Harrison - Son of Noah & M.F. Born 9-18-1891 Died 10-17-1895.

J.W. Grimes - Born 11-6-1881 Died 6-19-1883. This is the son of Joshua English & Charity Foley Grimes.

Row 3

Mary Foley - 1819 Died 10-12-1914. This is the mother of Charity Grimes who has 3 of her children buried here. Also Mary's son John has a grandchild, by his daughter Julie Foley Rowell (infant of Mr & Mrs J.C. Rowell) , buired here. Mary's husband Elijah Foley died on his way home from the Civil War. The exact location of his grave is unknown but it is believed to be in Pollard, Al.

Row 4

Infant dau. of S.M. & L.E. Bowe Died 5-9-1887. Stephen & Laura Ellen (Caldwell) are burried at the Damacus Cemetery in Coffee County, Alabama. They had a son who practiced medicine in Elba for many years. Per Charles Caldwell, Elpaso, TX.

Susan Russell Beckham Caldwell - Born. 5-10-1812 in Jones Cty, Ga. Died 12-27-1901 in Coffee Cty, AL. Wife of Henry Allen Caldwell

Charles James Caldwell - Born 7-14-1864 Died 5-19-1884. Son of Henry & Susan Caldwell, listed above. Per Charles Caldwell, Elpaso, TX.

The above 4 Caldwell graves each had a second tombstone.. The only difference seems to be the inscription of places of birth & death and that they were much newer. These are the oldest 2 graves in the cemetery. How are they related to the Grimes? Or are they?

Row 5

Infant of Mr. & Mrs. J.C. Rowell. Born 4-10-1895 Died 5-25-1895. This would be James Crawford Rowell & Julie Frances Foley Rowell.

The above John W. & Julie A. Grimes were the parents of Martha F Harrison, wife of Noah Harrison. Martha and 3 of their children are also buried here. Noah's gravesite is unknown to me at this time. They were also the parents of Joshua English Grimes who married Charity Adeline (Sis) Foley, (they have 3 children buried here ) & Sarah Elizabeth Grimes who married Charitys brother John S. Foley.(who have a grandchild buried here also)

Martha F. Harrison - Born 6-16-1866 Died 12-12-1903. This would be the wife of Noah Grimes & the daughter of John W. & Julie A. Grimes. Martha has 3 children buried here also. Old Wise Cemetery

Compiled and contributed by: Glenn Farris, Michael & Jo Ann Wise (jmwise29@yahoo.com) MAY 2000

Location: To get to this cemetery from the Pea River Bridge-if you are coming from town-turn right onto CR 401 (aka Old Samson Rd) after crossing the bridge. Follow this road 1.9 miles and turn right on CR 410 (aka Old River Rd). Go 1.2mi and turn right into the driveway of a hunting lease, there are white rocks at the beginning of this drive. (If you are coming down Old River Rd from the other direction the cemetery is about 1.5 mi from the New Haven Bpt. Church. Walk back in about 100-150 yards. There will be a hunter's blind on the right and a food crop on the left-turn left and follow the edge of the crop about 50 yards and look into the trees on the left. We found 8 stones left. With the spacing of the graves my guess is that there are more graves there. (Notes are Jo Ann's)

McIntosh Cemetery

This cemetery in not marked or named on the Coffee County map.

In an article (Book unknown at this time) called "Battle Branch Echoes" about "Ward's Raiders" an outlaw band during the Civil War, John Clark and another man were captured after the outlaws burned the Coffee County Courthouse. John Clark tried to escape and was shot but the other man was hanged. And both men were buried side by side in shallow graves, near the site of the hanging (near the Pea River bridge in Elba). They were both buried in disgrace with there boots on and their toes above ground. John Clark's father got permission and removed the bodies to Corinth Cemetery and re-interred them side by side in the almost abandoned cemetery presently known as McIntosh Cemetery, which is located between Baton's Cross Roads and Double Bridges Creek in Coffee County. The Clark family were so humiliated over what John had done and the way he had died that they soon sold their farm and left Alabama.  We believe the below cemetery is the one referred to in the above article.

Information compiled from cemetery interment markers on 31 JAN 1998 by Joan Hallford Hidle.

Location: Go west on Hwy 636 from Batten's Cross Roads. Turn left on County Road 642. Go about 30 yards and turn right on County Road 641. Go one mile. The cemetery in a field,on the right and in a clump of trees and brush and briars.

The Prestwood Family Tragedy
By Donnie Franklin Brown

Terry Prestwood was born in the state of Georgia on June 10, 1800. He originally settled in the vicinity of Andalusia, Alabama in neighboring Covington County where the name Prestwood is well known and respected till this very day. Our story begins after Terry and his 2nd wife, Gilly Shiver, moved to the Northeast section of Coffee County near the Old Tabernacle Community sometime in the 1850's. When the Civil War began in 1861, Terry & Gilly had five sons (and five daughters), four who were old enough for military service and either joined or were conscripted into the Confederate Army. As was common in those days, all four Prestwood brothers joined the same company, which became Co. A of the 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment. Terrys' son Joseph was given a furlough from the Army in 1863 after becoming ill and came home to rest and recuperate. It soon became apparent that Joseph Prestwood had the dreaded disease smallpox, one of the worst communicable diseases of the 19th century. The Prestwood homestead was immediately quarintened so as to prevent the further spread of the disease. Other families in the community helped as much as possible by bringing items for the family and leaving them a safe distance away for later retrieval by the Prestwoods. Gilly Prestwood had an infant whom she was still nursing and she sent baby Harriet to daughter Kate Sheppard who was nursing her own baby, hoping that Harriet would not become infected. Joseph died about two weeks after returning home and he was soon joined in death by a six-year-old sister, whose name is unknown. Terry and Gilley buried both of them on a tall hill on the Prestwood farm. Terry & Gilly were the next to become infected with the disease; 13 year old daughter Lucinda tried to nurse her parents as well as she could. But both Terry and Gilly soon died within 24 hours of each other and were buried with the first two victims. Somehow, young Lucinda Prestwood survived without contracting the disease and after waiting long enough to be sure she was safe, Lucinda burned the house in which her parents and siblings had died. Unfortunately, the tiny "smallpox cemetery", as the Prestwood family plot has came to be known, had not received its' last resident. Lucinda died in 1864 from influenza and Harmon passed away in 1867 from the effects of malnutrition and diesease while in the Confederate Army. Brother Thomas Prestwood received mortal wounds during the battle of Resaca, Ga., and died in a hospital in Atlanta. Eventually, all surviving members of the family moved away with the exception of Francis Marion Prestwood, who became a successful farmer after the War and owned much land. Today, the small cemetery has been retaken by the forest but remains as a sad reminder of how far we have came in the area of controlling communicable diseases.
