Location: Take 5 1 S. from Clayton turn left on Co. Rd. 43 go approx. 3 1/2 miles and Its the second dirt road on the right named Vinson Rd. According to the 1991 Barbour Co. map this road comes to an end, it doesn't! Go past an old house on the left that is failing, just a little further down you will bear off to the left on a small grass road and the cemetery is on the left. It is surrounded by an Iron fence. There is a lot of brush In front of It. It Is easier If you look for the open walkway before you get to it, so you can walk in that way. The walkway going up to it that is bordered by what looks like fallen trees. These are both good dirt roads for any vehicle. The cemetery Is not in good shape, the fence looks as If at one time they had tried to repair It with Iron porch railing. I couldn't tell where the church had been, unless it was just before you get to the cemetery on the same side. Most of the stones are standing facing away from this road, so maybe the church, or another road was on the other side? There am a lot of rocks there for head and footstones, most you can tell they are babies, or children by size. There am also several of unmarked graves, I think we counted 62 unmarked total, that included the ones that are marked only with rocks. When they are by some of the ones that have headstones I have noted them in the survey.

This stone shall point her friends the way to meet her in sternal day; Shall cry, behold thy savior God, be cleansed by his redeeming blood Oh Husband, Mother, Father too, the narrow path of life pursue; My Sisters, Brothers, faithfully be, until your face again I see.

According to Pete Lunsford, there were 10 to 15 graves at the time he was a young boy. The cemetery is 3/4 of an acre according to deed. It is behind the Lunsford home place and is very over grown and markers are broken. Any info on "McElvin"-McKelvain -McIlvain, ect- Please email at bertie@digitalexp.com
[In her 1960s compilation of Barbour County, AL cemeteries (Alabama State Archives), Marie Godfrey also refers to this cemetery as the "Cunningham Cemetery" ]

Located near the intersection of Barbour County Road 130 and County Road 9, between Louisville and Banks, in Barbour County, AL. The cemetery is surrounded by a wire/chain link fence, and is quite large. It is possible there are many more unmarked graves in this cemetery. In October 1997, this cemetery was very heavily overgrown.

In Barbour County, Alabama, there is the Danner Family Cemetery located about S24, T8, R23. It is close to the Pike County line on a county road just south of Alabama Highway 10. If you go about 4 miles on River Road, it is deep in the woods. There are 21 markers in the cemetery; three that are marked. My cousin, father, and I had to go through heavy underbrush just to get to the cemetery.

The Church no longer holds services.(2002)
*The Church was built in 1949 at the Cemetery site which was used by the disbanded
James Chapel, which was located about a mile from Ariton on the River Road,
near the Nance home. The Holmes Church was named for Henry Holmes , b.1798;
d.25 June 1867, who owned the land which the burial grounds. His Great, Great
grand-daughter came from Washington, D.C., in 1991, and placed coping and a
marker at the site of his and his wife's graves.
There are Many unmarked and broken graves, It is a well kept cemetery.
On March 24,2002 , I was met at the Cemetery by Bea Scovill and her brother
Abe Garner, I was on Row 5 of doing the survey, Bea had found a Survey that
was done in 1992,by Dave and Virginia Myers, since their survey there has not
been many burials, but looks like there has been new Headstones placed, I have
put a * near the info from their survey, that we could not read the names or
dates. The back row which I call 9 has a lot of markers that are broken or very
hard to read. Good luck to all. Christine Grimes Thacker, (cgt714@aol.com),

From Homer : *Holmes Baptist Church and cemetery is on State Road 51 north of
Ariton
just across the Dale line in Barbour; the following Confederate soldiers are
buried there:
William H. Hartzog, 1837-1921
Isaac G. Messick, 1840-1911
W.F. Parker, no dates
Phillip R. Renfroe, 1843-1902
McGee Cemetery
Contributed by: Terri Tait, jtait@hiwaay.net.
Gammage Road, northwest of Eufaula, AL, on the left bank of the road about
two miles north of the nursery. (hidden by trees). Two graves enclosed by
a wrought iron fence.
Mr. McGee was a large cotton planter, and requested that he be buried by
the side of the road so that all who passed could tell him the price of cotton.
For years, everyone called it out to him as they passed.

Barbour County, AL Survey Date: 06/13/1997) Surveyed and Compiled by Bill & Pearline Burdette, 19 Anita PL SE Mableton, GA 30126. E-Mail address: Wburdet1@Flashnet.com - or - WBurdett.faacbi@Juno.com. Surveyor & Compiler's Notes: Exact location: (Cordinates 85d 29' 42" W; 31d 41'm 21" N), about 466 feet west of County Road 41. Directions: From intersection of State Highway 131 and County Road 41 proceed South 1.3 miles on CR-41. Cemetery is visable off to right at edge of wooded area. From intersection of State Highway 10 and CR- 41 (East of Blue Springs), proceed North on CR-41 for 2.1 miles. Cemetery is on left. As of 06/13/97, the following observations were made: (1) Access driveway from CR-41 to cemetery had gravel applied for about 25' - the remainder was clear cut and acessable by automobile. (2) Extensive work had been done at the cemetery by someone since the 1996 growing season, for the whole cemetery had been clear cut and burned off. A new looking hog wire fence had been installed on new iron posts around the perimeter. (3) The headstones were somewhat smudged with carbon from the burn-off and moss. We made no attempt to disturb the stones while reading them. (4) The size of fenced area is about 125' x 175 feet. (5) There are a number of unmarked graves (no headstones), however, there appears to have been an effort to mark graves by other methods (iron rods the size of 're-bar'). One grave was covered with a mound of fieldstones. (6) Judging from the recient care of this cemetery, we suspect someone in the Blue Springs area may have information on the remains in the unmarked graves. Note: Last names with lower case are 'Married", not "Maden" names.
