Generation No. 1

1. ED1 BARBEREE was born Abt. 1822 in Georgia, and died Nov 1885 in Coffee County, Alabama1,2. He married SARAH A. (NEE?) BARBEREE. She was born Abt. 1830 in Georgia, and died Dec 1928 in Coffee County, Alabama3.

Notes for ED BARBEREE:
Ed Barberee age 58 born in Georgia, wife Sarah age 50 born in Georgia, and their children; Mattie 17, Frank 13, and John 10, all born in Alabama, lived at Clintonville on June 21, 1880 when the census was taken. Their next door neighbor was James Dallas Rudd and his family.

Notes for SARAH A. (NEE?) BARBEREE:
Listed on the 1880 census in Coffee County, Alabama as the wife of Ed Barberee. In 1900, she was a sixty-nine year old widow living in J.M. (John) Barberee's home and identified as John's mother. There is a record of death for a Sarah Barberee in Coffee County, Alabama in December 1928. If this is the same person, she lived to be about ninety-seven years of age.

Children of ED BARBEREE and SARAH BARBEREE are:
i. MATTIE2 BARBEREE, b. Abt. 1863, Alabama.
ii. FRANK BARBEREE, b. Abt. 1867, Alabama.
2. iii. JOHN M. BARBEREE, b. Abt. 1870, Alabama; d. Feb 1939, Coffee County, Alabama.

Generation No. 2

2. JOHN M.2 BARBEREE (ED1) was born Abt. 1870 in Alabama, and died Feb 1939 in Coffee County, Alabama. He married (1) 1ST UNKNOWN Abt. 18894,5. He married (2) 2ND UNKNOWN Abt. 1894. He married (3) MARY J. (NEE?) BARBEREE Abt. May 18986. She was born Abt. 1884 in Alabama, and died 28 Feb 1959 in Coffee County, Alabama.

Notes for JOHN M. BARBEREE:
John was a ten year old, living in the home of Ed Barberee in 1880. On June 16, 1900 he was head of household in Grant's Precinct, Coffee County, Alabama. He was identified as J.M. Barberee age 28 born in Alabama. His wife was Mary J. age 16. There were two children; Ada 5 and Henry 3. Sarah A. Barberee, John's mother, age 69 and a widow lived there as well. The census indicate that J.M. and Mary J. had been married two years and that she had never had children.

John Barberee, age 38, born in Georgia (sic), wife Mary J. 25 born in Alabama, and children; Ada 15, Henry 13, Emma 7, Annie L. 5, Ada Pearl 3, and Lulla (sic) May (sic) 1 year-4 months lived at Grant's Precinct, Coffee County, Alabama when the census was taken on April 25, 1910. The census indicated that John and Mary had been married ten (sic) years and that she had given birth to five children, four of whom were living when the census was taken. The census also indicated that John had been married three times and Mary one time.

John M. Barberee age 51 born in Georgia, wife Mary J. 38 born in Alabama, and children; Emma 17, Annie L. 15, Ida P. 13, Lula Mae 11, William A. 9, Mollie J. 7, Alice 5, Cora 3 years-two months, and Bessie 1 lived at Clintonville, Coffee County, Alabama when the census was taken on January 22, 1920. Note, Ada P. from 1910 was identified as Ida P. in 1920. Ida P. makes more sense, because John had a daughter by a previous marriage named Ada.

J.M. Barberee 61 born in Alabama (sic), wife Jane 50, and children; Emma 26, Annie 24, Lula M. 21, William 19, Mollie 17, Alice 15, Cora 13, Bessie 11, Oscar 9, Rosa L. 7, Albert 5, Flossie 3, and Hobert 2 lived at Clintonville, Coffee County, Alabama on June 16, 1930 when the census was taken. The census indicated that John was 19 when he married the first time and Jane was 16 when she married the first time. From the 1910 census we learn that John had been married three times. From the 1910 census we learn that John was married to Mary J. They had been married two years and she had no children - but John had been married twice before. Therefore, Ada and Henry on the 1910 census were by a previous wife. The 1930 census revealed that John was 19 years of age at his first marriage. Adding nineteen years to his birth year places his first marriage about 1889 to the first Unknown. Ada and Henry, children on the 1910 census by a previous marriage, were born 1895 and 1896 respectively which suggests that John's marriage to the second unknown was about 1894. Mary J. and John married about May 1898, judging from the 1900 census entries and the approximate birth years of Mary's children identified on subsequent censuses.

According to Alabama Deaths, 1908 - 1959, a John Barberee died in Coffee County, Alabama in February 1939 and Mary J. Barberee died there on February 28, 1959.

Lila Mae is probably the Lula Mae born about 1908 who was the daughter of John M. and Mary J. Barberee who is shown on the 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses. Up until 1930 when she was 21 she had not married and was living at home. If this is the same person, Lila (sic) Lula Mae is the half-sister of Henry buried next to her.
