Thomas Chapel Baptist Church, off Route 734, on road to Sanders Point, is a black church built around 1880. It was a log building with weatherboarding. In the early days, it was very active. White people would attend their revival meetings and were good friends. Members gradually moved away and it was abandoned in 1955. The church is well kept and members return every year for homecoming. SCHOOLS Patmos School, at Routes 608 and 740. The first school was made of logs about 1870, and taught by Mr. Quarles. Another room was added later. Teachers have been G.E. Saunders, Pinkney Anthony, Miss Susie Tompkins, Melissa Tate, Rebecca Morgan, W. C. Wilkerson, J.T. Lansdowne, and Elisha Overstreet. Later, one more room was added and teachers were Lee Hill Anthony, Cosy Updike, Frances Burnett, Lucy Woodford, Roy Saunders, Mamie Johnson, Mae Cromer, Myrtle Nichols, and Myrtle Saunders. Families whose children attended this school were Dellis, Graves, Nichols, Johnson, Overstreet, Ayers, Mitchell, Fitzpatrick, Plymale and Hudson. Patmos later added one room for a high school Two years were taught. Meadow Ridge School was east of Palestine Church on Route 626. Hensley School was a black school. It burned in 1925 and was rebuilt. Louise and Merle English taught here. Rev. Sherrel also taught at one time. It is located off Route 734, near Saunder's Point. LEFTWICH - MITCHELL - FRANKLIN - SAUNDERS - MUSGROVE - CUNNINGHAM The old William Davis Home is located on the south side of Route 626, 0.8 miles east of Staunton Baptist Church. Turn at sign for Pine Shores, turn right a few feet from Route 626, the cemetery is in the field on the right. The house is a quarter mile farther on down the road. The house was supposedly built by William Saunders in the 1700's. It is part brick and part weatherboarding. The weatherboarding section is on the back and has a stone chimney. There are lots of windows and doors,. It makes me think it was built first and 244
