Augustine married first, Mary Turner, second, Mrs. Sarah Turner, when he was seventy- seven and she was seventy-two years of age. Augustine and Mary had six children: Lockey married Col. David Saunders, they had son, Dr. James Turner Saunders who married Anne Marie Rives. Sally Leftwich married Rev. William Leftwich, son of Col. Thomas Leftwich. Peyton married first Mildred Fuqua, second, Grace Bradfute. He died in Lynchburg at age 91. James married Mildred Turner, their son, James Thomas Leftwich, left Bedford, probably for Malde West, Va., as his son, James Thomas Leftwich, Jr. worked as a steamboat engineer on the Ohio and Kanawha Rivers. James Thomas Leftwich, III, marred Rita Somerville, and like most Leftwiches, attained great success. He headed the Woolworth retail empire in the era of rapid expansion in the 50's He spent 46 years working for the F.W. Woolworth Co. He joined the company in 1913, at age 24, as a $15.00 a week bookkeeper, and became its $200,000+ president in 1954. James and Mildred named their first daughter, Lockey, for James sister, Lockey, who married David Saunders. James' daughter, Lockey, married Henry T. Franklin, his father was Henry Franklin of Amherst. His mother was Rachel Powell, a descendant of Richard Powell, a prominent family of Amherst County. Gen. Tyler's Quarterly, Vol. 30, P 64. They all eventually settled in Bedford County. Lockey and Henry Franklin were traveling west in a covered wagon with their six small children (circa 1836). On the way, Henry died of a heart attack. Lockey brought the children back to Bedford and later married Alvin Claytor. Lockey and Henry are my ancestors, and I'm told by Albert and Reeder Leftwich, that they were probably going to join Lockey's brother, Jesse (Albert's ancestor), who has gone earlier. Other children of James and Mildred were Juliet, Hairston, Walter, Sally, Catherine, Etchison Grigsby, and Mary Leftwich. Jesse, son of Augustine Leftwich, Jr. married Sarah Briscoe. Robert, son of Augustine Leftwich, Jr., migrated to North Carolina. he had one son, G.W.G.I. Leftwich. Albert Leftwich descends from Augustine through Jesse. Albert and wife, Reeder, are from Cut Off, LA and have done considerable family researching and tell some interesting stories. Captain Uriah, son of Augustine, Sr., born 1748, died 1838. Uriah was an Ensign in the Revolutionary War and was Captain in the Bedford Militia. He received a warrant for 180
