married Mary Agee, Isiah married Feminia Robertson, Lucy Robinson Craghead, dtr. of third wife, married James English. Eventually most of the Craighead/Cragheads moved to Bedford City. J. Bruce Craghead married Lillie Lipscomb, dtr. of James and Sarah Leftwich Lipscomb and granddaughter of Jordan Lipscomb, one of the first settlers in Moneta. Mr. Craghead was a farmer and carpenter. They had eight children; Warren, Willie, Jennings, Clinton, Mrs. Bob Owen, Mrs .Hill Bays, Mrs. Howard St. Clair and Mrs. Ralph Obenchain. Craghead's Garage opened in Moneta with Warren as operator. Jennings later became a partner, later turning it over to Jimmy. In 1965, Jennings and sons closed the old shop and opened the present garage on Route 122, near 655. Jim Craghead recently started a new business next door, "Craghead Ready-Mix Inc." FRANKLIN Bedford County order books record the Franklins among the earliest settlers. Thomas was here in 1762. Owen and Edmond fought in the Revolution from Bedford County. One branch of this family lived in Amherst County before coming to Bedford County. Henry Franklin, born 1717, married Margaret and died 1792. They had eleven children: John M., first wife Pamela Dawson, second wife Margaret, Henry NI., Sally, James, Joel, Samuel, born1755, married Rachel Powell 1794, died circa 1830, Phoebe, Elizabeth, married James Ballenger, Margaret, married Reuben Harrison 1770, died 1839, Sarah Hensley, married Joseph Ballenger and Philadelphia Franklin, born 1784, married William Smith. Samuel Franklin married Rachel Powell, daughter of Thomas Powell. The Powells were very prominent in Bedford County. Rachel's brothers fought in the Revolution. The Powell genealogy can be found in Tylers Quarterly, Vol. 30, p. 64. Samuel and Rachel had a son, Henry T. Franklin. Thomas Powell left his estate to daughter, Rachel and grandson, Henry. Henry married Lockey Leftwich in 1820. Lockey was the daughter of James Leftwich (Redhead) and Mildred Turner. Henry and Lockey had seven children; Mary Jane married Daniel Field and lived to be 102 years of age. Eliza married Daniel P. Skinnell, Sarah married Thomas W. Scott, John H. married Nancy Field, James L. Samuel, and Thomas P. Franklin, Henry and Lockey Franklin were traveling west with the children in a covered wagon when Henry died of a heart attack. Lockey returned to Bedford County and later married Alvin Claytor. Known children of this marriage are Martha Claytor, who married John W. Taylor, Mildred married James T. Chilton, and Pleasant Claytor, who married Elizabeth J. Chilton. 69
