There were no bridges then and this was a stagecoach route which followed the creek a little closer than the road does today. From the entrance going north to the house is about a mile. Capt. James Wilson built the present house before 1859. The bricks were made on the property. The house was most unusual. It was built like a small fort, much larger that it looks. The first floor is partly below ground, so the windows are small and originally had bars across that were I 1/2 inches thick. To the south of the house was a recessed area like a basement open with a small porch over it. TURNER / WILSON / LIPSCOMB This area was within sight of the stagecoach road and facing the recessed area and the road were holes in the wall of the house. These were used for the guns to sight the enemy during the Civil War. It appears that someone stood watch outside in the recessed area, ran inside and readied the guns when they heard the sound of horses. It is not known whether or not the guns were used but we do know that Gen. Hunter's men were in the area pillaging. Capt. Wilson bought Davis Mill in 1859, but sold it and resigned his commission in 1861. The family said he became ill. Capt. James Wilson was born June 22, 1813, in Loudon County, VA, and married Eliza Lazenby on December 18, 1839. He died August 11, 1883. Capt. Wilson descends from: Ebenezer Wilson, born 1737, married Hannah Wilson. Died 1807. John H. Wilson, born 1781, married Mary Hambleton 1809. Died 1855.
